Donald Ray Mullican went to sleep on January 2, 2016 and woke up in the arms of Jesus. He was 76 years old. Born in Nashville, Tennessee on June 1, 1939, he was the devoted son of Houston and Margaret Bell Mullican. Don is survived by the love of his life for over 55 years, Gwendolyn Crouch Mullican. The two began dating in high school, but had known each other for the better part of their young lives. After three years of courtship, they were married on August 11, 1960, shortly after Gwen graduated from high school.
Don's life is remembered as one marked by remarkable character and integrity in both his career and personal life. Starting a career in banking in the transit department at First American National Bank in Nashville in 1958 without benefit of a college degree, he quickly began climbing his way through the organization. In 1979, as an EVP at First American National Bank, he was recruited to take the helm of Harpeth National Bank in Franklin Tennessee as its President and CEO. After leading that bank through its acquisition by First Tennessee Bank in 1982, Don moved to Gallatin Tennessee to assume the role of President of First and People's National Bank. Several years later in 1988, he would complete the circle by re-joining First American National Bank after it acquired First and People's. Don ended his long banking career a few years later as a Group President with First American National Bank.
Through the years, Don served in the following community service roles: District Chairman - Boy Scouts, President of the Gallatin Chamber of Commerce, Trustee for Brentwood Academy, Vice-President of Noon Rotary Club of Franklin, and Deacon at Forest Hills Baptist Church. Don also served in the Tennessee Air National Guard.
Preceded in death by father, Houston Mullican and granddaughter, Erin Mullican. His life is celebrated by his wife of 55 years, Gwendolyn C. Mullican; his children, Ray (Lori) Mullican and their four children (Alex, David, Ellie and Keeli), and Mike (Shelia) Mullican and their three children (Kelsey, Jacob, and Joshua) and one grandchild (Kenzie). Don is also survived by his mother, Margaret Mullican, and siblings Betty Arnold, Harold Mullican and Carol Leslie.
