Dorothy Lau

June 24, 1934 — March 8, 2016

Mrs. Dorothy Dean "Dottie" Lau, age 81, longtime resident of Nashville, TN and Murfreesboro, TN passed away March 8, 2016. Born in Hot Springs, AR to the late Ruby Harvey & Dean Messersmith. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. Mom was an artist in every sense of the word and easily mastered every craft she chose. In the 1970's she owned a studio, Macrame by Dot, where she made and sold her creations, later adding clay pottery. She also owned Professional Secretarial Service in Murfreesboro and operated a courier service. She retired from the State of Tennessee in 2000 after 15 years of service and was a long-time Administrative Assistant to the State Senate representing three different Senators from the Knoxville area. After her retirement from the State of Tennessee, she took up painting, eventually settling on watercolors. She leaves behind many treasured works of art as a living testimony to her amazing gifts and talents. Our family would like to thank the staff at Belvedere Commons in Franklin, TN for the wonderful care, support and love they provided Mom. We would also like to thank the staff at Adoration Hospice for the compassionate care and support they provided us all in the final days of her life. You have both been a blessing to our family. She is preceded in death by brother, Robert Gene "Bob" Messersmith. Survived by brother, Don "Dino" Messersmith of Palestine, TX; sister in-law, Mary Lou Messersmith of Hot Springs, AR; daughters, Robbin (Alan) Cross of Franklin, TN and Cheryl (Roger) Davis of West Point, MS; four grandchildren, Nick Cross, Angela Cross, Phillip Stewart and Patrick Stewart. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00PM Friday, March 11, 2016 with visitation one hour prior at Christ United Methodist Church, 508 Franklin Rd. Franklin, TN. Rev. Anne Hook officiating. Graveside services will be held in Memorial Gardens Cemetery at a later date in Hot Springs, AR. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in her honor to Adoration Hospice, 545 Mainstream Dr., Suite 413, Nashville, TN 37228, www.adorationhealth.com or the Alzheimer's Association.
