Mrs. Dorothy Steinbis Davis passed away on December 22, 2014 at the age of 92. Dorothy was born on September 11, 1922 on a farm homesteaded by her grandparents in Tulare, South Dakota. After graduating from the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota, she served in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps as an officer from 1944 to 1946 in the 57th Field Hospital. She participated in the Central European Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. She also earned a degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland in 1977.
Dorothy served 60 years as a Red Cross volunteer nurse and she was a two-time recipient of the Clara Barton Honors award. She was a charter member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and past President of the Battle of the Bulge Historical Foundation. Dorothy was also a member and past Commander of the General George G. Meade Maryland Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars and a member of Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Dorothy has received numerous honors in her lifetime. Among them are the Edith Cavell Nurses Medal from the Belgian Red Cross for her participation in the care of the wounded from the Battle of the Bulge; In 1995, HRH King Albert II of Belgium awarded to her the decree of the Knight of the Order of the Crown for her wartime service; and in 2004 she was awarded the French Legion of Honor by the government of France at the Invalides, Paris, France. She was also awarded the Patrick Henry Gold Medallion for Patriotic Achievement by the National Commander of the Military Order of the World Wars.
Dorothy was married to Colonel William (Bill) V. Davis who preceded her in death in 1979. She is survived by: daughter Sandie Davis of Adelphi, MD; daughter Jackie Cantlon and husband Scott of Franklin, TN; daughter Laurel Synnestvedt and husband John of Virginia Beach, VA; grand-daughter Sarah Kinkade and husband Devin of Ellisville, MO; grand-daughter Becky Holland and husband Nathan; and three great-grand-children Guylan Holland, Evangeline Holland and Weston Kinkade. She is also survived by her sister Della Benning of Redfield, SD and her brother Raymond Steinbis of Sycamore, IL.
A memorial service will be held 11AM CST Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home with visitation from 10AM-11AM. Dorothy will be memorialized and interred at the Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. at 11AM EST Tuesday, April 21, 2015.
