He earned a Masters of Divinity degree from the Nazarene Theological Seminary along with a Masters and PhD from the University of Kansas. Dr. Cleckner spent his entire educational career encouraging and helping students achieve their maximum potential. In the fall of 2009, a group of former students and peers hosted a luncheon in his honor at Trevecca in recognition of the many contributions he had made to their lives. Preceded in death by parents, George W. and Eva P. Cleckner; three brothers and five sisters. Cleckner (Jenny); grandchildren, Lindsay Jennings (Seth), Jacquelyn Harris (Justin), Angela Porada (Mark), Kelly Anderson (Robert), Jessica, Paul W., and Chase Cleckner, Jeremy and Mackenzie Mattingly; seven great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters. While Dr. Cleckner earned many accolades, his greatest accomplishment was the legacy he left with his family. His grandchildren called him Papa and he was always there when they needed him, whether it was attending a football game, lacrosse match or fixing a flat tire. The lessons he taught them will never be forgotten. He was a man who truly lived out his favorite quote, "your need my vision."
