FERRELL, Dr. M. Craig, age 62 of Franklin, TN. Born in Seattle, WA and left this life much too soon on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, succumbing to injuries sustained being thrown from his horse the previous week.
How is a man's life to be measured?
Is it by those whose pain and suffering he's lessened? If this is the case, count the tens of thousands of people Dr. Ferrell helped in his 33 years as a practicing orthopedic surgeon.
Is it by the institutions in which he attended and excelled? Coming from Webb High School in Tullahoma, TN, Craig received his BS degree from Notre Dame University, his MD degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, his internship and general surgery training from the Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, and his Orthopedic training at Campbells's Clinic in Memphis, TN. That's a world class pedigree.
Is it by the awards and honors from Swimming and Equestrian organizations, the Legend Award from the county in which he spent his life, and being named to the Best Doctors in America in 2011?
Perhaps it is by the positions held a Chairman and President of the Bone and Joint Clinic, Secretary and Chairman of the US swimming, chairman of the Tennessee Sports Medicine Committee, Chairman of Brightstone Adult Handicapped Center, Board member of Battleground Academy, Williamson Medical Center, and the Willis Campbell Foundation, Professor and Vice Chairman of the Vanderbilt Orthopedic Department, and Chairman FEI Medical Committee, International Horse Sports Governing Body.
Or maybe by his serving as physician for several US Olympic and World Championship Swimming teams and Us Olympic and World Equestrian Teams and FEI Chief Medical Officer 2008 Olympic Games in China and 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY.
None of this matters to those of us who knew him as a man. The day after his fatal accident his family and many partners and colleagues had the privilege of sharing his life. We will all miss you greatly.
If this is how Dr. M. Craig Ferrell's life is to be measured, then it is truly immeasurable. Rest in peace my husband, my father, my brother, my friend.
