Dr. Richard "Dick" Nelson Kinsley, Jr., age 87, of Thompson's Station, TN, passed away December 31, 2016. He was a veteran of the US Army who served his country during the Korean Conflict by conducting research at Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center.
Richard was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 22, 1929 to Marion and Richard Nelson Kinsley. He graduated in 1947 from Friend's Select School.
Earlham College in 1951 with an AB, Washington University where he studied Mycology obtained an MS, and Purdue University with a PhD in Microbiology with an emphasis in Mycology in 1962. He finished his formal training at OSU where he did a Post-Doctoral study in Food Science.
He chose to spend his time and energy teaching at OSU in Ohio, Lycoming College in PA, and ETSU for 22 years when he retired.
During his life, he also pursued his love of scouting, participating in many different roles over 66 years of his life. He was an Eagle Scout and as an adult spent many hours as an Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master. He was a Wood Badge attendee as well as a trainer, and he was awarded the Silver Beaver award.
His hobby which the entire family enjoyed consisted of model trains. Many hours were spent setting up and maintaining model trains for the scout troops as well as his family.
He was also active in the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, and Rotary Clubs of which the most recent membership was the Spring Hill Rotary Club.
Dick and Carolyn were married on September 12, 1965, and were blessed with three daughters, Catharine Kinsley (Gerald) Johnson, Caroline Kinsley (David) Hunter and Julie Denise Kinsley; grandchildren, Jordan Roberts, Jeremy Roberts, William Johnson and Richard Johnson.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, January 7, 2017
