Ethel Scrivener

Ethel Ann (Nan) Scrivener, age 89, of Sea Cliff, Long Island, New York, passed away on December 2nd, 2020 in Tennessee.
Nan was born in New York City to Ethel and Fred Emmerich on March 18, 1931. She grew up in Great Neck, NY, and resided at 5 Tanglewood Lane, in Sea Cliff for more than 50 years.
Nan attended Trinity University in Texas and received her Masters of Education in Library Science from LIU Post.
For more than thirty years she worked as a beloved school teacher for the East Williston School District on Long Island, NY. Her retired teacher colleagues have made a contribution in Nan's memory to the David K. Israel Scholarship Fund which is awarded yearly to a graduating student in the East Williston district who aspires to be a teacher. It has been said that no child who ever heard her read a book forgot the magic of her voice. She greatly valued education and inspired many, including her granddaughter, to become a teacher.
Nan was an avid Bridge player. She played at the Great Neck Woman's Club of New York and The Woman's Club of Nashville, TN. Nan was also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock.
Nan's love of traveling was evident by her many adventures around the globe. She was grateful for the trips she took with her lifelong friends. Nan found beauty in all things. This was apparent by her enthusiasm for colorful flowers, expansive gardens, lake views, and ocean sands.
She was often found watching the sunset or playing bridge with her friends at Sea Cliff Beach. She consistently sought the good out of any situation and encouraged others to do the same. Her kindness to everyone was one of her most noteworthy qualities.
Nan was married to William Scrivener for 41 years.
Nan is survived by; her son Billy Scrivener, daughter Susan Scrivener Fischer (Will), brother Ted Emmerich, nephew Fredrick Emmerich, and granddaughter Marcelle Ann Fischer (Ryne).
Due to restrictions on large gatherings, there will not be a formal Memorial Service. Inspired by Nan's love of sunsets, the family is encouraging her friends to honor her by watching the sunset on Monday, December 21, from the safety of their home. The honorary sunset event will pay tribute to the end of an era, a season, and a Day.
