Evelyn Burrow Hagerty, 94, of Franklin, TN, died May 22, 2019. Mrs. Hagerty was born in Lewisburg, TN, on February 10, 1925, to James William Burrow and Ophelia Simmons Burrow. She was married for 40 years to Dan Hagerty, who preceded her in death in 1988.
Evelyn loved the game of bridge, and played weekly with several of the same ladies for over 65 years. Well into her 80's she had as many as three weekly bridge groups. Her penchant for making decisions and being in charge earned her the affectionate nickname of "Sarge" among her bridge ladies.
Mrs. Hagerty spent her professional career as a librarian for the US Corps of Engineers, in their Nashville offices.
With no children of her own, she made a second career of spoiling two of her nephews, Trey Doak, who spent every weekend with the Hagertys as a child, and Kevin Doak who took loving and attentive care of her in later years and who was at her bedside when she died.
Their childhood memories are filled with trips to Willow Plunge and Cascade pools, always-full candy jars with no limit on consumption, Sunday nights watching Bonanza and eating chili after church, and countless hours watching cartoons on Saturdays. The Doak boys cannot imagine what life would have been like without Aunt Ebb and Uncle Dan.
Mrs. Hagerty was a member of Heritage Church of Christ.
Also preceding Mrs. Hagerty in death were her sisters, Jean Doak (Hoyt), Christine Harper, and Myrtle Morgan (Jim), and her brother, Edward D. Burrow (Jean).
Mrs. Hagerty is survived by her brother, James Wesley Burrow (Dolores), nephews, Hoyt B. Doak, III, Kevin B. Doak, Hyde S. Harper, Jr., and James Scott Burrow; nieces, Pamela Burrow Lovvorn, Sherry Burrow Anderson, Lisa Burrow Justice, and Bonnie Burrow Spillers; brother-in-law, Hyde S. Harper and numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, May 27, at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, 3009 Columbia Ave., Franklin. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 28, at the same location, with visitation for one hour before the service.
Active Pallbearers will be Kevin B. Doak, Sr., Kevin B. Doak, Jr., Hoyt B. Doak, III, Hoyt B. Doak,IV, John B. Doak, Hyde S. Harper, Jr., and J. Scott Burrow.
Honorary Pallbearers are Jim Hudson, Jody Bowman, The Bridge Ladies, Jim White, and members of the Faithfulness Care Group.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Heritage Church of Christ Building Fund, Second Harvest Food Bank, or to the charity of one's choice.
