J. Dean Styers, Jr. passed away on July 17, 2015. He was born in Gastonia, NC to the late J. Dean and Juanita Perkins Styers.
Dean grew up in Gastonia and while in high school was an amateur radio operator with a commercial radio license. Dean served during WWII in the Navy after which he attended North Carolina State College and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
After graduation, he worked 38 years with Southern Bell and BellSouth (now AT&T). He retired in 1987 as district operations manager for the Chattanooga area. During his career, he worked at Bell Labs and the company headquarters in Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville before moving to Chattanooga in 1972.
He was an active member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church and participated in church work through out his years; he was a deacon, and chair of the personnel and finance committees. He and his wife, Dot, were founding members of Metro Baptist Church in New York while he was at the Bell Labs.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dot; sons Ron Styers (wife Nancy) of Spring Hill, TN and David Styers of San Diego, CA., grandchildren Jennifer (husband Ryan) Hibbard, of Spring Hill, TN, Michael (wife Teia) Styers of Nashville, TN and Rachel Styers of Nashville, TN. He has three great grandchildren; Andrew Hibbard, Addison Hibbard and Alaina Hibbard.
A memorial services will be held at Williamson Memorial on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Visitation is from 3:00pm to 4:00pm and the Memorial Service from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. Dean Styers will be buried at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, July 21, 2015.
