John McElroy Durrenberger
July 16, 1927 - July 30, 2013
A resident of Brentwood, TN for 38 years.
John was born in Bowling Green, KY to Fred Hubert Durrenberger, Sr. and Louise Shea
Durrenberger. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Dr. Julius Lucas Topmiller, DVM and Geraldine Durrenberger Topmiller. He moved to Nashville, TN with his aunt and uncle when he was 14 years old.
A 1945 graduate of Hillsboro High School, John joined the US Army Air Corps near the
end of World War II, serving in the European Theatre of Operations. Upon his honorable
discharge from the Army, John earned his private pilotʼs license and attended the University of Tennessee in Nashville. In his spare time he enjoyed playing sports as a member of his companyʼs softball and bowling teams, but his real passion was golf which he played until his arthritis forced him to give it up in 1975.
John was employed for 10 years in the accounting department of TEMCO in Nashville.
Following that, he worked in accounting for the Ford Motor Company, Glass Division for
30 years, ultimately rising to the position of Supervisor of Cost Accounting at the Nashville Glass Plant. During his career at Ford, John transferred to the Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, MI, then moved with his family to Tulsa, OK as a part of the team developing Fordʼs newest glass plant. He returned to the Nashville glass plant in 1975. While working for Ford, John was recognized as a top blood donor for the American Red Cross and served as a corporate liaison for the United Way of Middle Tennessee.
After retiring, John spent his days growing vegetables in his very large garden, making
wine from the grapes he grew in his arbor, playing with his dogs, and reading, reading,
reading. He later developed a love for cooking and even had his own kitchen built in the
basement at their home, where he spent many happy hours creating delicious dishes for his family. At the age of 70 he bought his first computer, which he used to follow the stock market and enjoyed playing many hours of electronic Solitaire. He was a member of Brentwood United Methodist Church for 38 years.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Imogene McClain Durrenberger, his daughters
