Kay Owen

OWEN, Kay Hutchinson, age 82 of Franklin, TN passed away on September 20, 2013. Born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Grant Hutchinson. Kay attended Indiana University and graduated in 1953 with a BS Degree in Nursing. She was elected to Sigma Theta Tau, an honorary society of degreed nurses; thereafter serving in administrative and teaching positions. Kay married renowned equine veterinarian Dr. DeWitt Owen in 1954 and moved to Franklin, TN where they opened the Owen Veterinary Hospital which operated for 40 years. Many still attest to the sterling reputation of this outstanding equine clinic. One of the greatest joys in Kay's life was her love of animals, especially horses. The excitement associated with horse racing held a prominent place in her life and heart. Likewise, music was a great passion for Kay and she was a fan of all genres from classical to jazz. Although she loved relaxing with a good book or a long swim, Kay never shunned a challenge and earned her private pilot's license in 1965 in a Beechcraft Debonair. She was also very involved in politics. She was one of seven charter members of the Williamson County Republican Women's Club where she served two terms as president and was an active participant for candidates in local, state and national levels. Following a move to Naples, FL Kay became active in a variety of charities. As her health declined, she returned to Tennessee to the care of her only child Cynthia Owen of Franklin who survives her, as well as two rescue dogs, Charlie and Coco. In addition to her many friends, the family gratefully acknowledges Nelson Luster and Ben Bowman, faithful employees of the DeWitt Owen Family. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, October 1st at 2:00PM at Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church. Visitation to follow at the church in Memorial Hall. Longtime friends Clay Harlin and Dr. John Haffner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, any animal rescue organization or the charity of one's choice.
