Lt Col August Frederick Wieters, USAF retired, passed away May 5, 2015.
August F. "Gus" Wieters was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 6,1929. He graduated from The Citadel in 1950, received his commission in the Air Force, and began the pursuit of his love of flying that lasted a lifetime. Leaving active duty in 1954, he entered The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he received his MBA. He moved to Memphis, TN, in 1956 where he was employed by Hornblower and Weeks, and later UBS PaineWebber, as an investment broker. He continued his passion for flying in the Air Force Reserves.
In 1958 Gus married the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Dean of Jackson, MS. He was a member of Whitehaven Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, an elder and chairman of the finance committee. He was a member of the Whitehaven Kiwanis Club and a founding and charter member of the Whitehaven Republican Club. He was honored by being named in "Who's Who In Tennessee." In 1992 Gus retired and moved to Destin, FL, where he became an active volunteer at Destin UMC and later the Community Church at Santa Rosa Beach and the Guild of Sacred Heart Hospital.
Gus in survived by his wife of 57 years, their daughters Libby Schielke (Mark)of Germantown TN, Linda Lewis (Kevin)of Franklin, TN and son Ted Rogers (Nancy)of San Antonio, TX, and by grandchildren, Shaun and Jason Schielke, Kate and Maggie Lewis, Garrett and Audrey Rogers.
His reputation as a true gentleman and a man of integrity was also his character. A terrible disease robbed him of his memories, but never of his kind, gentle spirit, his impeccable manners, and his caring for his family and friends. His grandson wrote a beautiful tribute that sums up what his life was about: "My granddad passed this morning from complications chiefly related to Alzheimer's. It took a terrible disease to lead to the passing of a truly great man. And in the end, he won; he was kind to the end, never bitter, never resentful of anything. Always, always (always!) thankful for his family...He realized that contentment is the highest form of happiness. A disease took his mind, but, amazingly, he kept his spirit and his loving nature."
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 8, at Franklin First United Methodist Church at 12:00. Visitation will be from 10:00 until the service begins. Interment will be at a later date in Charleston, SC. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to Franklin First United Methodist Church Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
