Marie Knudsen Schaffer, 101, was the third of 12 children, born to the Knudsen family of St. Louis, on Halloween 1916. This small lady graduated high school at 16. Her first job was with Western Union, and roller skates helped expedite the messages in the office. At 19 she married Roy J. Schaffer. They were the parents of five children: Phyllis (Kraft), Albert, Priscilla (deceased), Judith (Burt), and Stephen. Over time Roy became N Episcopal clergyman. Marie supported him in every way, from singing in the choir, to organizing bazaars, assisting the Red Cross with blood drives, and delivering Meals on Wheels, which she did into her ‘80s. Marie loved sewing for herself and the family, and she used those skills to decorate each house they lived in. Marie enjoyed gardening, but her work at the easel will long outlive her. Her artwork, mostly landscapes, has been exhibited and sold in many places. Her quiet presence, fine soprano and insatiable good humor will be missed by all she knew. Special thanks go to the staff of NHC Place Sumner Memory Care for their professional and loving care. Memorial service to be held Saturday, November 3, at St. Joseph of Arimathea Episcopal Church, Hendersonville, TN. Visitation at 10:00 AM, Service at 11:00.
