Marjorie Clayton

March 11, 1928 — November 24, 2015

Marjorie Dean Clayton, known by her friends as Deanie and her family as Mammy, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.
Dean was born in Campbellsville, KY, on March 11, 1928, to the late Oscar Winfrey and Edith Chelf Beard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Fred Ross Clayton, daughter Debra Dean Clayton and brothers W. R. and Louis Beard.
She is survived by son Craig Clayton (Anita) and daughter Carol Birdsong (David); five grandchildren Lauren Lester (Micah), Louis Clayton, Matt, Carson and Ross Birdsong; three great grandchildren Ella, Clayton and Emory Lester, and too many friends to name.
As a teacher, Dean influenced the lives of thousands of students by sharing her knowledge along with her positive outlook on life. During her 42 year career, she taught in Cave City, Crittenden County, Caldwell County and Christian County, KY and Cheatham County, TN.
Dean brightened any room as she always had a smile on her face, a sparkle in her eyes and a hat on her head. She put others first, and her positive spirit and attitude were contagious. From being the life of the party-singing, dancing or cheering-to being a friend to all, Dean was truly one of a kind. She loved her family, her friends, the friends of her children and grandchildren, high school football, Sudoku and crossword puzzles, the Kentucky Derby, her country and living. While she will be missed, her vibrant spirit and entertaining stories will be remembered and celebrated.
Dean treasured her poker and bridge friends at the Martin Center with whom she spent the last eight years, and she was a proud member of the Card Crusaders, supporting the Center and its members. Her going away party will be held at the Martin Center at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Card Crusaders in care of Fifty Forward Martin Center, 960 Heritage Way, Brentwood, TN 37027.
