Bates, Mary Jo fell asleep in the arms of Jesus on January 23, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Monroe, Louisiana on November 20, 1929 to Sadie Margaret Schmitt and Arthur Peter Schmitt Sr. She was raised in Nashville along side her dear brother, Arthur Peter Schmitt Jr. Mary Jo was a devout Catholic and talented pianist who could be heard in her youth playing the organ at the Cathedral in downtown Nashville. While a graduate of St. Cecilia Academy in 1948, she often recalled the wonderful times of high school particularly dancing the jitterbug with her classmates after lunch. During her early 20s, she met Walter T. Bates at the Andrew Jackson business school. Not long after, she was proposed to by the love of her life, in a sweet potato patch, and they were married on January 27th, 1951. Mary Jo was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed traveling, reading and being home on her farm. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother. She is survived by her sweetie of 63 years, Walter, daughter Janice Bates Toulon, son Travis Bates, her favorite son-in-law Daniel James Rodgers Toulon, granddaughters Jennifer Jo Toulon and Paige Toulon, and her puppies, Callie, Bitsy, and Sugar. Funeral services are at St. Philip Catholic Church, 113 Second Avenue S, Franklin, TN 37064 on Saturday, February 1st with visitation from 11am-1pm, the rosary from 1:15pm-1:45pm, celebratory mass from 2pm-3pm with burial to follow at Williamson Memorial. Active Pallbearers: Travis Bates, Dan Toulon, Don Coomer, Don Garner, Michael Welch, & Ronnie Harbison. Honorary Pallbearers: Lawrence Barnes, Wade Bobbitt, & Current and Retired Employees of Nashville Rubber & Gasket.
