CROMER, Mary Tom, 82, retired postmaster, died Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Spent nearly her entire life in College Grove, where she was devoted to her family, friends, community and church. She was born Oct. 7, 1929, the fourth daughter of Thomas C. and Mary White Miller. She married Buddy Cromer, her husband of almost 60 years, when they were both 19. He died on April 1, 2008. While bringing up three sons, she worked for years as a part-time clerk at the College Grove post office before becoming postmaster in 1979. In an era in which rural residents sometimes left an egg or tomato in their mailbox when out of stamps, Mrs. Cromer, who knew everyone in College Grove, often was called at home for directions and occasionally to open the post office after hours for an important mailing. Even in her last few years, she knew ZIP codes for towns far and wide. She is survived by three sons, Ed (Connie) Cromer of Nashville, Jimmy Cromer of College Grove, and Billy Cromer of Atlanta; a sister, Sarah Flanigan, Columbia; grandsons, Keith (Gerrie), Darrell and John Cromer of College Grove, Adam (Jenny) Cromer of New York, Matt (Becky) Cromer of Omaha, and Will Cromer of Nashville; four great-grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews. The service will be conducted 11:00AM Friday, March 30, 2012 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Justin Collett & Rev. Lenoir Culbertson officiating. Burial will be in College Grove Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be her co-workers of the College Grove post office. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to College Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Thursday at WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 615-794-2289. www.williamsonmemorial.com
