Mary Taylor Williams Gant passed away peacefully on January 13, 2016 at the age of ninety. Born in Washington, D.C., Mary spent her early years in Franklin, Tennessee and as a teenager moved to Nashville, Tennessee. She attended high school at Ward-Belmont in Nashville and was a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Following college, she taught English at East Nashville Junior High School. In 1964, Mary and her family moved to Birmingham, Alabama. As the last of her four children left for college, she resumed her work outside of the home as the assistant to the director of the Independent Presbyterian Church Day School. She returned to Franklin in 2012 and lived at NHC Place - Cool Springs at the time of her death.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Andrew McConnico "Mac" Gant, Jr., her parents, Dr. W. Carter Williams, Sr. and Mary Taylor Williams, and her brother, Dr. W. Carter Williams, Jr. She was a granddaughter of the late Governor and Mrs. Alfred A. Taylor and
Mr. and Mrs. John Burr Williams. She is survived by four children: daughter, Mary Carter Gant Cooper (Lee), and sons, Andrew McConnico Gant, III (Sue), Paul Taylor Gant (Sherry), and John Alfred Gant; grandchildren: Kathryn, Nancy and John Cooper; Lorien Gant Glisson (Nicholas), Megan and Victoria Gant; Katie, Carrie (Derrick Blalock), Paul Taylor (Kt), and Andrew Gant; a great-grandson, Ryman McConnico Gant; sisters-in-law: Betty Smith and Margaret Grimes; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mary was an active member of Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, where she taught children's Sunday school, was a member of the Altar Guild, and was a frequent volunteer in many programs, including the Christmas Box Ministry for the Children's Fresh Air Farm. She was a devoted and supportive mother, leading and participating in the many interests of an active family. She was also an unwavering supporter of Mac's many activities, particularly in their commitment to the Boy Scouts of America. And she will be remembered as a kind caretaker to any neighborhood animal which needed assistance - the family's veterinarian kept an open tab.
