Mattie Sue Cathey Hazelwood, (also known as Mom, Grandmother, Aunt Matt, Mattie and Matt) age 93 of the Flat Creek Community moved on to be with Christ and her loving family and friends, waiting to welcome her in joyous celebration to her heavenly home on January 28, 2022.
Mattie Sue was born January 22, 1929 to her parents, James E. and Carrie Epperson Cathey. She married Joe Will (J.W.) Hazelwood July 13, 1946 and they spent 62+ years together in love, laughter, joy and sadness, building a strong and loving family. Her strong Christian faith, love of Christ and her Church were the centerstone of her life. Mattie Sue was a life-time member of Ash Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Her pies, cakes and ice cream were crowd pleasers at the annual ice cream supper at church. Mattie Sue, along with other ladies of the church, used her excellent sewing and quilting talent to make many beautiful quilts for the annual ice cream auction. Her family was her greatest joy. Mattie’s children, grandchildren, great grandchildren knew she was always there to welcome them with loving arms, fun and great food. Mattie was also well known for her beautiful flower gardens. They were her pride and joy. From early spring through late fall she could be seen planting, weeding and watering her many plants.
Mattie is survived by her son, Lonny (Judy) Hazelwood; daughter, Dinah Hazelwood and daughter in law, Donna Hazelwood; grandchildren, Dale (Shannon) Hazelwood, Cathey (Bryon) Polk, Jason Vaughan and Brian (Brandi) Hazelwood; bonus grandchildren, Jamie (Amber, Atlee & Josie) Hancock and Shannon Haston; great grandchildren, Grant and Brett Polk, Lauren (Brad) Bacon, Greg (Emily) Hazelwood, Johnna, Will, Seth, Barrett and Brody Hazelwood, Emily and Ryan Vaughan; great great grandchild, Beau Bacon; sister, Lou Emma (William) Skipper; sisters in law, Annie Lee Neal, Irene (Morris) Williams and Dodie Hazelwood.
Mattie is preceded in death by husband, Joe Will (J.W.) Hazelwood; parents, James E. and Carrie Epperson Cathey; children, Larry Hazelwood and Kerry Hazelwood; grandchildren, Gina Hazelwood, Scotty Vaughan, Brandon Hazelwood and John Hazelwood; brothers, Henry, John, Jimmy, Cromer, Elmer and Dan Cathey; sisters, Josephine Ketchum and Janet Buchanan.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Wednesday February 2, 2022 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Pastor Steve Rogers officiating and words of remembrance by Dale Hazelwood. Interment Williamson Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Roger Cathey, Dennis Steele, Seth Hazelwood, Will Hazelwood, Grant Polk, Brett Polk, Dale Hazelwood and Jason Vaughan. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Ash Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to Ash Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be 3-7PM Tuesday and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 615 794-2289 williamsonmemorial.com
