Mr. Charles "Cha" Everett Hughes, age 66, passed away suddenly Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at his residence and childhood family farm, located on Mahon Road. He was a Maury County native, and retired from Consolidated Freight. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009, at The Race Shop, located at 995 Mahon Road, Columbia, TN. The family will greet friends from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday, with a Memorial Service beginning at 12:30 PM. State Representative Ty Cobb will be officiating. A potluck social and celebration will immediately follow the service. Everyone is invited to join. All festivities will be held at the Race Shop. It was his wish to be cremated and his remains returned to the family farm where he grew up, and currently lived. The family will honor his wishes at a later date in a private ceremony. Charlie, known by many as "Cha" was a former Spring Hill Alderman; an avid collector of toys, which had been featured on Tennessee Crossroads; a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and a Christian. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Richard & Charlotte Mahon Hughes; brother, Clarence Hughes; sisters, Gail Brook Hughes (infant), Eula Faye Marlin and Christine Hunter. Survivors include his loving wife and soul mate of 46 years, Thelma Ferguson Hughes; his "girls" Tammy Hughes, Jennifer (Allen) Smith and Christy (Earl) McKee. Also survived by his pride and joy, two grandchildren, his best friend and running mate, Austin Beatty and his beautiful angel Saranda Smith. Nephews, Sterling (Paula) Marlin, Steadman (Mandi) Marlin, Mike (Debbie) Fentress & Jerry Fentress and niece, Sutherlin Marlin; sister in law, Wilma (J.B.) Fentress and other loving family members. He would also want mentioned his furry friends, Jill, Jane, Checkers, Maggie, Wilbur and the many donkeys, goats, horses, mules, chickens, geese, guineas and ducks that he enjoyed and tended to daily. He also held a special place in his heart for his "extra" grandchildren that always enjoyed a visit with Cha over dinner prepared by Mee-momma. Honorary guests will be "Buster" Billington, Gerald Smith, Morris Matthews, David Edwards, Jeremy Ring, Larry Turner, Carrie Lovett, Darrell Hartley, "Buzz" Floyd, Gwendolyn Warf, Kim Herring, Tracey Groves, Roy Wilhoite, friends at John Deere and Maury County Convenience Center and his special little buddy, Stirlin Blaise Marlin and newest buddy, Langley Faye Marlin.
