Mr. Charles F. "Poppy" Marsden, Jr., age 91, of Poplar Estates, Columbia, TN, entered into the presence of his Lord on Friday, February 17, 2012.
Born in Newark, NJ, he grew up in Elizabeth, NJ. In 1942 he married Margarette Houston, but soon thereafter, in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following training he was deployed to the Pacific Theater as a Bombardier/navigator on B-24 bombers. He flew 30 missions over the Western Pacific Islands, and Japan, was shot down twice, and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. At wars end he returned to his family and career in NJ. Charles spent 40 years employed by the former Esso Standard Oil Company as a research chemist, holding several patents. He retired in 1979.
During his life he served both his community and his God. He was on the Board of Education of Bedminister Township, NJ, as Vice-President, served as a Deacon and Elder of the Bedminister Reformed Church, NJ, volunteered at local hospitals and animal shelters in FL and VA. His hobbies were varied, from raising and selling parakeets, canaries and finches, to making semi-precious stone jewelry. However, his first love was his family.
Survived by his life's partner of 70 years, Margarette (nee Houston) Marsden of Columbia, TN; sons, Tom (Judy) Marsden of Ridgewood, NJ and Donald Marsden of Advance, NC; daughter, Phyllis (Bill) Egan of Spring Hill, TN; grandchildren, Jill D'Alessandro, David MacCallister, Amy Navarro, Rebecca Wynd, Holly Benson and Luke Marsden and 13 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed, but will live in our hearts forever.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church of Spring Hill, 5344 Main St., Spring Hill, TN.
