Howard Thomas Williams, 95, of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away on August 9, 2012.
Howard was born on July 21, 1917, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Technical High School in 1935 and from Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1941 with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education (Business).
Howard joined the Army in September 1941 and was soon selected for Officers' Candidate School. Following OCS, he volunteered for glider pilot training and was assigned to Bowman Air Field in Louisville, Kentucky. On April 10, 1943, he met Vera B. Moore. They were married three months later on July 9, 1943. From October 1943 to August 1945, he was stationed in England and France as part of the 9th Air Force Pathfinder Group.
Upon his return to Louisville after the war, he took a job as an auditor with a public accounting firm. In 1950, he left that position to become an assistant internal auditor with the Girdler/Tube Turns (later Chemetron) Corporation. In 1963, he became an assistant internal auditor at the Louisville Water Company where he served as internal auditor, credit manager, and assistant secretary-treasurer until his retirement in 1981. Howard and Vera moved to Franklin, TN, in 1998.
Howard and Vera attended the Bardstown Road Church of Christ in Louisville where Howard was baptized in the spring of 1948. From 1954 to 1998, they worshipped at the St. Matthews (later Westport Road) Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and church treasurer for many years. In Franklin, they were members of the Berry's Chapel Church of Christ. Howard started playing golf in 1947 with a friend from church and that was to become his chief pastime. He continued playing golf up to the age of 92, making birdie the last year he played.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents George Williams and Carrie Black Williams, by a brother Robert Williams, and by a sister Ruth Seal. He is survived by his wife, Vera Moore Williams of Franklin, by two children, John (Carol) Howard Williams of McKinney, TX, and Karen (Phil) Williams Gibbs of Franklin, and by a brother George (Ruth) Williams of Taylor, PA. Howard is also survived by four grandchildren, Gavin Williams, Zane Williams (and wife Jodi), Joshua Gibbs, and Kelsey Gibbs, as well as one great-grandson, Buck Williams.
You will find no man more steadfast and reliable than Howard Williams. A man of integrity and honor, he was always faithful to his wife, his children, and his church.
