Mr. Kenneth Deck
March 4, 1948 — January 16, 2013
Kenneth Russell Deck was born in Taylorville, IL, March 4, 1948 & passed away too soon on January 16, 2013 in Franklin, TN at the age of 64.
Ken loved Taylorville & especially his THS class of 1966 classmates. He was a member of the National Honor Society & an athlete lettering in football, basketball, both of which he co-captained his Sr. year, & track from 1963 through 1966 while setting several school records along the way. He was twice inducted into the Taylorville, IL High School Sports Hall of Fame; first for his individual achievements on 4/27/02 and next on 4/24/10 for the 1966 Taylorville Tornadoes Basketball team of which he was a co-captain. Of the two, he was probably most proud of the team honor. Sports weren't just about the game to Ken, it was most importantly about his teammates & the friendships they shared both on & off the field. Ken attended Kansas State University on a full football scholarship before transferring to Illinois Wesleyan University where he graduated. He spent 27 years in the closure business starting with Sierra Fasteners which was bought by Constructions Fasteners which was bought by the current SFSintec. The same attitude that made him an outstanding athlete also made him an outstanding salesman. His professionalism & honesty held great appeal to customers, suppliers, competitors, & fellow employees alike. He was known as a kind & gentlemanly person with a great spirit that will be sadly missed. A man of integrity.
He was above all a family man; he adored & was adored by his family. He was the glue that held his family together & the voice of reason & love, not to mention humor. He coached numerous of his children's sports teams & was continuing the tradition by coaching his grandson Ryan's indoor & outdoor soccer teams.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Eleanor Lynch Deck; son James Kenneth (Trish) & grandsons Ryan & Zach Deck; daughter Melissa (Steve) Outlaw, grandson Alex, & granddaughter Alicia; brothers John (Bonita) Deck & Bobby Deck; sister Rita Schmidt; & countless aunts, uncles, & cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Burton & Rita Deck, & his older brother James (Paula) Deck.
A memorial visitation was held Saturday, January 19th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville, IL.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25th & again at 2:00 p.m. prior to his memorial service on Saturday, January 26th at 3:00 p.m. at the Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Franklin, TN.
A Kenneth Deck Memorial Fund has been established to send one or more boys/girls from Taylorville, IL to a sports camp they wouldn't otherwise be able to attend. There was a man in Taylorville who made sure Ken was able to attend a basketball camp for at least a couple of years & Ken would love this opportunity to pay it forward. Checks may be made to the Kenneth Deck Memorial Fund & sent to David Trost, 2604 Lincoln Trail, Taylorville, IL 62568.
