Mrs. Agnes Sykes

SYKES, Agnes Sanders, died September 19, 2011, in New Hanover County, Wilmington, NC. She was born October 6, 1912 in Cheatham County, Henrietta, TN the daughter of the late Elmer and Nettie Nicholson Sanders. Mrs. Sykes enjoyed a 70-year career in retail sales beginning with McClelland's, then Cain-Sloan Company, and retired in 2002 from Henig Furs in Nashville, TN. She was well known in the Middle Tennessee community as Cain-Sloan's bridal consultant and then later for her expertise in fur sales. She was lovingly referred to as "Gran A" by much of her family and several of her clients as well.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dossie Holmes Sykes. Mr. Sykes was a WWII veteran and retired from the DuPont Company at Old Hickory, TN. Mrs. Sykes is survived by daughters, Joan Sykes Cunningham (Mac) of Wilmington, NC and Lynn Sykes Cain of Franklin, TN; three grandchildren - Christopher Cunningham (Heather) of Brentwood, TN, Elizabeth Cunningham Moore (Richard) of Wilmington, NC, and Katherine Cain of Lexington, KY; and seven great-grandchildren. She was a member of City Road Chapel United Methodist Church of Madison, TN for 50 years, transferring membership to First United Methodist Church of Franklin, TN in 1996, and recently attended Grace United Methodist Church of Wilmington, NC. The family wishes to thank the staff at Davis Health Care Center at Porters Neck in Wilmington, NC for their professional and loving care over the last three years. Visitation with the family will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Franklin, TN in the Historic Sanctuary on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 9 AM. A memorial service celebrating her life will be conducted at 10 AM at the church. Dr. A. Lynn Hill will officiate. Interment will be at Spring Hill Cemetery on Gallatin Road in Nashville, TN.
