REED, Garnet Fornof, age 89 of Nashville and Hendersonville, TN.
May 31, 2012. Preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Rev. Walter Reed, son Walter Reed, sister Ruby Blackburn, and brother John Fornof. Survived by daughter Deana (Jim) Hannah, granddaughter Alisha (Gary) Schlichter, great-grandsons Roman and Logan Schlichter, sisters Patricia (Harry) Clapp and Adamae Gilmore, sister-in-law Fran Fornof; brothers Adam (Esther) Fornof and George (Dorothy) Fornof, and many nieces and nephews. A registered nurse, Mrs. Reed graduated from the Presbyterian University Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh in 1943, served at Veteran's Hospital in Aspinwall, PA, and was a life-long member of PUHNAA. She participated in the original Nurses' Health Study since its inception in 1976. She was active in Presbyterian churches all of her life, serving as an ordained elder, church librarian, and Sunday School teacher. She was an elected commissioner to General Assembly, president of Women of the Presbytery, president of Church Women United, and served with her husband as a volunteer in missions in Ponce, Puerto Rico and Belfast, Ireland. She was a member of the Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church, where her husband served as organizing minister. Mrs. Reed and her husband organized the Osborne Day Care School for underprivileged children in Lake Worth, Florida and she served on its Board of Directors for many years. She enjoyed rose gardening and writing and she served as president of the Tennessee chapter and as national recording secretary for the National League of American Pen Women. The family thanks the staff and volunteers at Alive Hospice, the staff at Carestone, and devoted friends Memecon Simeon and Selamawit Hailu for their loving care. Services are scheduled for 2:00PM Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sally Hughes officiating.
