COVINGTON, Jane Miller, 91, a retired schoolteacher, died peacefully in her home in College Grove on Friday April 15, 2011. Known as "Miss Jane" to her students and much of the community, Mrs. Covington taught math and science at College Grove and Page High School for 38 years. For years she served as the girls basketball team chaperone and directed the senior class play. During World War II she served in the WAVES. She was thrilled in 2008 to visit the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery as part of an Honor Flight for Williamson County veterans, and only last November she rode in the Veterans Day parade in Franklin. Mrs. Covington was a graduate of the state teachers college that eventually became MTSU. She was in hospice care in her final months but continued to enjoy company, read books and watch birds at a feeder outside her window. Her limitations grew, but she adapted, always finding something in which to take pleasure. She became an avid fan of The Price is Right. Miss Jane was one of four daughters of Thomas C. and Mary White Miller. Bruce Covington, her husband of 50 years, died in 2000. An older sister, Josephine Culberson, died in 2007. She is survived by sisters Sarah Flanigan of Columbia and Mary Tom Cromer of College Grove; a stepson, Erik Covington; stepdaughter, Beverly Overbey; and a step-granddaughter, Tandie Moore of LaVergne. She also had a niece and six nephews and was a world class doting aunt. In 2009, while taking her daily one-mile walk (with a walker) in the Trails End neighborhood, she suffered a serious fall. But she made it home from the hospital and nursing home in time for a big 90th birthday party at College Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful, lifelong member. For a while she got out often with the help of her dedicated caregiver Ellen Moser, but when confined to home she read a book a day and followed the Braves on TV, whooping and clapping whenever they scored. She was caring, mannerly and big-hearted. She treasured her family, friends, students, neighbors and church. By the time Lent came this year, she was barely able to eat, but she was determined to give up something. She gave up The Price is Right. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00AM Monday, April 18, 2011 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, Walter "Bud" Alexander and Justin Collett officiating. Interment, Williamson Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to College Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 4-8PM Sunday at WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 615-794-2289. www.williamsonmemorial.com
