Mrs. Mary Gower

GOWER, Mary Ruth Shreffler, (Mrs. F.E. "Gene" Gower (deceased), 90, Died August 6, 2010. She lived in Birmingham, Al. since relocating from her home in Franklin, Tn. in 1999. Mary was born in Alma, Illinois to Lois (McNeil) and Arthur Shreffler. Following her father's death (1921) she moved to Nashville in 1934 with her mother who married Edward M. French of Bellevue. She graduated from Bellevue High School and married Gene Gower in 1939. Following a 14 year stint in Chattanooga, and the birth of two sons, they returned to Nashville in 1953. Mary served over 15 years as an Executive Assistant with the Presbyterian Board of World Missions. Active in Franklin First Presbyterian Church for many years; Mary & Gene were known as being generous to anyone in need, as well as actively supporting area youth programs, particularly her work with The International Christian Youth Exchange. Mary is survived by her sons Robert D. Gower (Patsy) of Birmingham, Al. and Roger E. Gower (Julia) of Nashua, NH, and Grandchildren Elaine Leonard (Oxford, Ms.), Scott Gower (Atlanta, Ga.), Ross (Kate) Gower (Franklin, Tn.), Kate (Benjamin) Bentley (Franklin, Tn.) ; Great Grandchildren, Chad, Keely, Ashley, and Tyler Leonard. Great Grandchild Jack Gower celebrated his first birthday last month in Franklin. A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2010 at 11:00am at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home.
