Sally Hines Hinkle, Extraordinary Horsewoman

Sally Hines Hinkle, aged 87 yrs., passed away unexpectedly at her Fox Den Farm in Franklin, TN on Thursday, July 3rd, 2014. The day before, she was able to spend time doing one of her most favorite things, watching a horse show event at Brownland Farm in Franklin.

She is survived by her two sisters, Anne Hines Weir, Knoxville, TN and Willmia Hines Thomson (Bill Thomson) Valdosta, GA, children Sally H. Hinkle of Nashville, John C. Hinkle II (Sean E. Dockery) of Florida and Lurton B Hinkle (Angie Moran Hinkle) of Franklin, grandson Jeremy Hinkle, and nephews Scott Weir and Paul Weir, Brac Thoma, Butch Thoma, Bill Thoma, and neice Beth Thoma.

Her parents Henry Duncan Hines and Willmia Roark Hines, brother Scott Hines, and husband Jack C Hinkle all preceded her in death, along with a long list of great companion thoroughbred horses.

Born in Bowling Green, Kentucky on May 17, 1927 and raised in Brentwood, TN, Sally attended Robertson Academy, Peabody Demonstration School and Stephens College.

Her passion since an early age was horses, along with her sister Anne. An avid horsewoman, she not only learned how to ride, she did it all from mucking stalls, to breaking, training, jumping, racing, showing and breeding . At one time on her 100-acre River Bend Farm on Old Hillsboro Road in Franklin, there were close to 20 horses that she had raised and trained.

She was a pioneer in a lot of horsewomen's eyes. Before women jockeys were allowed to professionally race, she was among those breezing horses for their races in Hialeah, FL She was much sought after as a jockey here for the Diana Cup race - the only race designed for women in the seven event annual Iroquois Steeplechase. She also loved to Fox Hunt, participate in the Pony Club and show in Hunter/Jumper events in the region. For a good while, it was she and her sister Anne, taking home most of the trophies and ribbons.

Like-wise, she didn't mind getting up on a bush hog to mow the fields, Indy-drive a riding lawnmower around the yard or steer the tractor at hay cutting time.

She was a rare and special breed who will be missed beyond measure.
