Mrs. Sidney Tillman

TILLMAN, Mrs. Sidney Katherine Hart, age 84 of Franklin, TN died November 2, 2010. A descendent of the founders of Nashville, Mrs. Tillman was born December 26, 1925 in Birmingham, AL to Claiborne Young Hart & Nora Glenn. She moved to East Nashville in 1933 and later to Franklin in 1941. In 1944 she graduated as Valedictorian from Franklin High School, receiving a full scholarship to Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt, in 1948, she earned a BS, majoring in Accounting. After graduation she worked at Southern Bell Telephone Company for four years until a co-worker, Angie Tillman, introduced her to her younger brother, George Newton Tillman, whom she married in 1953. Together they had three children: Nora Katherine (Donald) Summar, Sidney Louise (Daniel) Tillman, and George Newton Tillman, Jr. In addition to her husband and children, Mrs. Tillman is survived by four grandchildren, Talmon E. Melton, Kathryn L. (Charles) Spencer, Jessica C. (John) Grider, G. Claiborne Hoover and one great grandchild, D. Davis Grider. For more than 57 years, Mrs. Tillman was co-owner of C.Y. Hart Distributing Company with her husband. Additionally, she was active in many clubs and charitable causes including: The Robert Cartwright Chapter of the DAR in Nashville for 30 years, Old Glory DAR in Franklin, Cheekwood, The Carter House, Carnton Plantation, Pioneer Demonstration Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, and the Laureate Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for more than 60 years. She was also a long time member of the Franklin Historic Presbyterian Church. Always a Southern lady, Mrs. Tillman loved flowers, cooking and entertaining. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00AM Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Franklin Historic Presbyterian Church, Rev. Sally Hughes & Rev. Will Berger officiating. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Active pallbearers; Dewees & Douglas Berry, Clay Jackson, Albert Stockell, Stan Gunnells & Jim Robert. Memorials may be made to Franklin Historic Presbyterian Church, 435 Main St. Franklin, TN 37064-2755 or to the charity of your choice.
