Mr. Stuart Nunnally

NUNNALLY, Mr. Stuart Jackson, age 77, died Sunday May 29, at Alive Hospice St. Thomas Hospital. Stuart was a United Methodist Minister, serving the Tennessee Conference from 1955 until his retirement in 1995. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia and received his undergraduate degree from Emory University, and his Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University.
While being a member of the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church, he pastored churches throughout Middle Tennessee. These included Hillcrest UMC, First United Methodist in Smithville, Arlington UMC, First United Methodist of Franklin, Belmont UMC, Forest Hills UMC, First United Methodist of Gallatin, First United Methodist of Tullahoma, Woodbine and Dalewood Methodist Churches. In addition, he served the Conference as District Superintendent of the Clarksville District. Stuart was a lifelong member of the Lions and Rotary Clubs. He worked with Boy Scouts of America and Richland Village. He was active in the Civil Rights movement, working to integrate society, beginning with the attempt to integrate churches. He helped establish the Crisis Call Center in Nashville, and was instrumental in the creating the first Half Way House for the mentally ill in Nashville. He was also the founder of and first minister at Nashville's Hillcrest Methodist.
Stuart was the son of the late Elizabeth and John Elam Nunnally of Atlanta. He was also brother to the late John Nunnally of Marble Falls, Texas and Elam Nunnally of Milwaukee. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Charlotte Lasley Nunnally; daughter, Beth Nunnally (Vaughan) Smith of Macon, GA, son Jack (Anita) Nunnally of Nashville; granddaughters, Alex Nunnally of Texas and Mary Stuart Smith of Macon; grandsons, Jackson Nunnally of Nashville and Will Smith of Macon; sister, Betty Loden of Atlanta; best friend and devoted friend of the family, Steven Lee Davis of Nashville, California and New York; sister-in- law Suzi (Dick) Sittel of Nashville. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends throughout the United States.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00PM Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Franklin, Rev. Peter Van Eys, Rev. Lynn Hill and Bishop William Morris officiating. Visitation will be held in the sanctuary of the church beginning at 11:30AM with a reception following the service in The Fellowship Hall. A private graveside burial and service will be held at the family cemetery in Monroe, GA at a later date. Honorary Pallbearers are members of The Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church.
