Mrs. Vera Williams

October 2, 1918 — April 8, 2015

Vera Moore Williams, 96, of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away on April 8, 2015 in the early morning.
Vera Beulah Moore was born on October 2, 1918, on a small farm in Washington County, KY, the sixth of nine children. She graduated from Cornishville High School in 1936 with the highest average in her class. She also graduated from Spencerian Business School in Louisville, KY, in 1939 with a degree in secretarial science. She worked in Louisville as a secretary for several years.
On April 10, 1943, she met Howard Thomas Williams, a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. They were married three months later on July 9, 1943. Within another three months, he was shipped over to Europe for two years. She continued to work in Louisville, and, upon his return from World War II in 1945, they decided to make their life there.
Vera bore a son, John Howard, on November 19, 1946, and a daughter, Karen Lee, on May 15, 1950. In 1949 Vera and Howard bought their first home in the newly developed suburbs of Louisville. They lived there for over 25 years, and she never again worked outside the home. In 1977, Vera and Howard moved to a home nearer their church. They lived there for 21 years.
Vera and Howard were active members of two congregations in Louisville, first at the Bardstown Road Church of Christ and then, starting in 1954, at the St. Matthews (later Westport Road) Church of Christ where she taught the second-grade Sunday school class for over 25 years. They lived in Louisville as a couple for 53 years before moving to Franklin, TN, in 1998. In Franklin, they worshipped at the Berry's Chapel Church of Christ. When Howard died in 2012 at age 95, they had been married 69 years.
Vera will always be remembered as "the brightest smile in the room." She was vivacious, competent, and caring. She had a beautiful singing voice and, as a teenager, won a talent competition. She loved children, flowers, and cats. She always carried something in her purse to give a child she might meet. She never met a stranger. Although frugal with her money, she was generous with her time and talents, a wonderful friend and neighbor. She was a great cook and homemaker. She learned to drive at 14 and drove until she was 92 without ever having an accident or getting a ticket.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband Howard T. Williams, by her parents Robert Lee Moore and Gertrude Roberts Moore, by two sisters Beulah and Mary Lou, and by six brothers Cecil, Ancil, Marshall, Bland, Robert, and Carl. She is survived by two children, John Howard Williams (Carol) of McKinney, TX, and Karen Williams Gibbs (Phil) of Franklin, and four grandchildren, Gavin Williams (Megan), Zane Williams (Jodi), Joshua Gibbs, and Kelsey Gibbs, as well as one great-grandson, Buck Williams, a great-granddaughter, Gentry Williams, and a host of nieces and nephews.
