SLOAN, W. Keith, 86, of Franklin, TN, passed away peacefully at home on June 16, 2010, surrounded by family. He has been under the care of Guardian Hospice since November. He was the son of Dr. Frank R. Sloan and Inez Claire Snyder Sloan of Red Oak, Iowa. He was a World War II veteran, serving first in the 28th Airborne Tank Battalion at Fort Knox, and later in the Philippines. He married Mary Kay Kirby on July 9, 1945. Mr. Sloan was a graduate of the University of Michigan (MA in Actuarial Mathematics, 1948), a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, a Life Member of the Faculty of Actuaries Students Society, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and held two fellowships in the Life Office Management Association Institute. He retired in 1997 after 50 years in insurance and its regulation. He is listed in several of the Marquis Who's
Who volumes, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Commerce and Industry, and Who's Who in Science and Technology. He was also listed in the first edition of Who's Who in Cancer. He was a Kentucky Colonel and had the Order of the Alaska Walrus. He was a columnist for Contingencies magazine and active in several writing groups. He contributed poems, essays and one short story to two anthologies. He was a choir director at several churches, and held a deep love of music. Mr. Sloan was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Fran Sloan and Bertha Sloan Collins. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Kay, his daughter Karen (Richard) Osborne of Franklin, his son Kirby (Marie) of Woodstock, Georgia, and grandchildren Katherine (Katie) Osborne and Tyler Osborne, Louisa Bartlett-Sloan, Julia Bartlett-Sloan and Mary Bartlett-Sloan.
