Murray Borthwick

April 3, 1927 — June 19, 2014

Murray Alexander Borthwick was born in Midland, Michigan April 3, 1927 to Scotch Presbyterian parents William K. Borthwick and Jeanne Murray Borthwick. Murray was a first generation American.

Murray joined the U.S. Army for two years, after graduating from High School in 1945. He was a graduate of Central Michigan University in 1951, having married Bonnie after his sophomore year, June 18, 1949.

In 1951 they moved to the Detroit area and his career with Chrysler Corporation began. For 36 years, his primary work was in labor relations. They joined Lake Shore Presbyterian Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan in 1952. He loved serving at church because of his faith in Christ. He was an elder, deacon, trustee chairman, and an ushering team captain. Their two daughters, Barbara and Laurie, born in 1955 and 1957, were raised in the church.

He and Bonnie were campers for many years, starting while their daughters were growing up and continuing into retirement in 1987. They spent winters in Florida and summers in Michigan.

They attended ClearView Baptist Church when visiting Tennessee, and eventually made Franklin home in 2005. Their five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren were cherished by Murray and Bonnie.

Murray died on June 19, 2014 at his home in Franklin, TN at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie of 64 years.

Murray is survived by his sister, Jeanie (Lyle) Sorrell; two daughters, Barbara (Al) Reed and Laurie (Doug) Wheeler; four grandsons, Eric (Leslie) Reed, Scott (Anne) Anderson, Brian (Katrina) Anderson, and Ben Wheeler; three granddaughters, Kirsten Reed, Sara (Jon) Heaser, Brenna Wheeler; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at ClearView Baptist Church, Dr. Ed Thiele officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Borthwick's Great Grandchildren to the Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child.
