The Reverend Doctor Albert Sidney Crigler, III, affectionately known as "Shep" died Tuesday night, July 31, 2019 at 9:45 pm. He was surrounded by family and friends that day and night. Originally from Mississippi, currently residing in Franklin, TN; Shep was 83 years old at the time of his death. Shep came into this world the biggest Mississippi State fan anyone had ever seen; born in Starkville, Mississippi Thursday, March 5, 1936. Shep thoroughly enjoyed and excelled in sports his whole life. He was very active in student government and sports at Starkville High School. He was Salutatorian of his 1954 graduating class. Growing up a member of Starkville's First Presbyterian Church, Shep was often praised by members for his graceful and confident speaking skills; which ultimately was a factor in his later call to ministry.
Shep attended Mississippi State his freshman year where he pledged Sigma Chi fraternity and afterwards transferred to Southwestern at Memphis (renamed Rhodes College in 1984). He played varsity football and baseball there before he graduated with a B.S. in Political Science in 1958. He served two years in the Navy as a navigator which explains his avid love for maps. Afterwards, he attended Louisville Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky from 1960 to 1965. Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, Mississippi was his first church to pastor. There he was ordained minister into the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in the spring of 1967. On his first Sunday as minister, he spotted from the pulpit, the love of his life, Ann Smith-Vaniz, sitting in the congregation. After a brief courtship, Shep and Ann were married in her hometown of Cleveland, Mississippi on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1967. Two years later, their daughter, Julia Kathryn Crigler, "Juky" was born in Gulfport. At the end of 1969, Shep accepted the call to serve as minister at First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown, Kentucky. Three years later in 1973, Shep and Ann's son, Albert Sidney Crigler, IV, "Sid" was born. Shep served that church until he received his next calling as minister of Oxford, Mississippi's First Presbyterian Church. Shep served in Oxford for nearly nine years until he got his final call as minister for First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama, starting in the spring of 1983. After serving Huntsville's First Presbyterian Church for thirteen years. He later served as interim minister for the following churches; First Presbyterian in Sylacauga, Alabama; First Presbyterian in Kingsport, Tennessee; First Presbyterian in Shelbyville, Tennessee and finally First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee.
One of Shep's favorite past times was working out at the Franklin YMCA. Six years ago, Shep was working out right up until the moment that he went into the hospital for chest pains. Shep was immediately admitted for a scheduled quadruple bypass. there was not a day that you didn't see Shep heading to the Y to work out. As he always did in Huntsville, Shep would pack his gym bag daily, and head to the Y during his lunch hour. Some things never change. Shep was so loved by everyone he met, that it wasn't too long before he was referred to as "The Mayor" of the Y. Shep also enjoyed his weekly "Taco Tuesday" outings each Tuesday night with his family, at his beloved Mexican restaurant in Franklin, Pueblo Real. Shep will be greatly missed on this earth. The lives he has touched in his 83 years are beyond comprehension. Fly high, Daddy Shep. Until our angel wings all meet again....may you rest in peace. His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of the Lord." Matthew 25:21 May God reassure him how worthy a servant for Him that he was.
He is predeceased by parents, Albert Sidney Crigler, Jr., "Shep" and Kathryn Crumpton Crigler both of Starkville, Mississippi, and "Frank" his beloved dachshund. Survived by his loving wife, Ann Smith-Vaniz Crigler; daughter, Julia Kathryn Crigler Holt, "Juky," (son-n-law, Shane Holt, granddaughters Mary Jess and Ann Hayden Holt); son, Albert Sidney Crigler, IV, "Sid," sister, Anita Crigler Boyle (brother-n-law, Dan, nephews, Mike and Pat Boyle; and Bonniebel, their other beloved dachshund.
