Virginia Bowman

October 16, 1923 — February 3, 2018

Virginia Colley McDaniel Bowman, age 94 of Franklin, TN passed away February 3, 2018. Preceded in death by parents, Gordon Hicks and Frances Colley McDaniel and husband, Joseph Hamilton Bowman III. Survived by: son, Joseph Hamilton Bowman IV and wife Gilda; daughter, Frances Colley Bowman; brother, Gordon Hicks McDaniel and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Joseph Hamilton Bowman V and wife Emily and William Otis Brent Bowman and wife Shelley; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Virginia, William Lane, Josephine Anna Jane and Matthew Hamilton Bowman. Mrs. Bowman was a member of the Church of Christ for over 90 years. She taught the Tuesday Afternoon Ladies Bible Class for 60 years. Longtime member of Franklin Chapter 14, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Trustee of the McGavock Confederate Cemetery Corporation, charter member of the Williamson County Historical Society, member of the Historic Zoning Commission and later a member emeritus, Williamson County Historian and Franklin City Historian, author of "Historic Williamson County: Old Homes and Sites", signed the Articles of Incorporation for the Carnton Association and was a Life Member of the Board of Directors, former member of Douglass Demonstration Club. Honors included the Jefferson Davis Medal given by Franklin Chapter, No. 14, U.D.C. for excellence in the preservation of Southern history, the Heritage Foundation's Patrons' Award, the Williamson County Historical Society's Distinguished Service Award, the Franklin Lions Club Citizenship Award, and the Williamson County Chamber of Commerce Legend Award. Mrs. Bowman and James H. Armistead designed Williamson County's Great Seal. Recently Mrs. Bowman was honored by Williamson County and Franklin City officials by having a cannon on the public square named "Virginia". After a private burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, a memorial service will be held 4:00 PM, February 5, 2018 at Heritage Church of Christ, 1056 Lewisburg Pike, Franklin, TN with visitation from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heritage Church of Christ Building Fund, P.O.
