Dr. William Henry Long, born September 20, 1928 in Decatur, AL died January 31, 2015. Preceded in death by his parents, Judge W. Henry Long, Jr. and Sarah Lapsley Long; and son, William Pratt Long. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice Rogers Long of Franklin, TN; daughters, Jan (Robert) Williams of Rayville, LA and Nancy (Daniel) Stephen of Nashville, TN; son, Daniel (Christina) Long of Thibodaux, LA; eleven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
After earning BA, MS and PhD degrees from UT at Knoxville, NCSU at Raleigh and ISU at Ames, respectively, he worked as college professor, entomologist, agricultural consultant and geologist for 43 years (1957-99) during which time he was a Professor of Entomology at LSU in Baton Rouge, a Distinguished Service Professor at Nicholls State U in Thibodaux, LA and owner of a consulting business serving south Louisiana farmers. In the 1970s he served brief assignments as an Expert in Entomology for the UN and IAEA in Egypt and Brazil. He was widely recognized for his work in pioneering, developing and practicing integrated pest management in sugarcane agriculture, and was inducted into the Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2000 for his years of dedicated service to the betterment of Louisiana agriculture.
He grew up in a Presbyterian home and converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon or LDS) at age 30, five years after marrying an LDS girl. He was an active LDS priesthood member for 16 years and served as a branch president. He later became active in the Presbyterian church where he served for several years as an elder. In his last years he regularly attended LDS church services with his wife.
A funeral service will be held 11AM Thursday, February 5, 2015 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1100 Gray Fox Lane, Franklin, TN 37069. Bishop Doug Johnson, officiating. Visitation 4-7PM Wednesday, at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home and 10-11AM prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested for the Nashville Rescue Mission.
